Hello! I am Ruby Bernabe Castro. Alumni at Cal State LA with a Bachelor of Arts option in Graphic Design/Visual Communication.
Growing up, I loved to draw for as long as I can remember. My drawings consist more of fashion design, which includes drawing people and dressing them up in different styles. My mom believed I would choose a career related to fashion design. However, when I saw my older brother aspiring to be an architect, he joined this club, MESA, a bridge construction competition to determine how much weight a bridge made from plywood could resist. Seeing how he built and used design plans inspired me to follow his path. I was fascinated by how you can design and develop your ideas and watch them come to life. I joined clubs correlated with the STEM field and MESA throughout high school. I enjoyed designing and building. What better way to combine art and math?
In my sophomore year in high school, I took an art class. My teacher mentioned a contest for high school students held across multiple schools. It involved designing an original sneaker for Vans. Each high school would submit student designs for the competition. The teacher chose my design and gave me a white Vans shoe to bring my design to life! Although I didn't win, I enjoyed the process of designing and painting. However, the class that inspired me to choose graphic design was during my senior year in high school when I took a yearbook class. I enjoyed going around campus and taking photos using the principles of photography. My passion for layout design sparked how I can visually showcase information. It was when my design got chosen for the front and back cover of the yearbook for my class year. I knew I wanted to go into the field of art design!
